A lot of beginners choose their first DJ setup the wrong way.
They shop by fantasy.
They see the clean desk, the cool lighting, the expensive controller, and suddenly think they are one purchase away from becoming That DJ.
Please be serious.
Your first setup is not supposed to impress strangers. It is supposed to help you learn, practise, and not cry over compatibility issues by day three.
For most beginners, a controller setup is still the smartest place to start. On Pioneer Malaysia’s current controller lineup, the clearest beginner-entry options are the DDJ-FLX2 at RM999, the DDJ-FLX4 at RM1,999, and the DDJ-REV1 at RM1,999. The FLX2 is positioned as the easiest way in, while the FLX4 and REV1 give you more defined learning directions depending on the workflow you want.
The DDJ-FLX2 is the “stop overcomplicating your life” option. It works with rekordbox, djay, and Serato DJ Lite, supports streaming services, runs on USB bus power, and includes Smart CFX and Smart Fader to make early mixing less intimidating. In normal language: it is built for people who want to start learning without turning setup into a whole personality crisis.
The DDJ-FLX4 is for the beginner who already knows this is more than a passing phase. It supports rekordbox and Serato, includes Merge FX, has a mic input, and uses USB-C.
The DDJ-REV1, on the other hand, is for the beginner who likes a more scratch-leaning, battle-style layout. Same price tier. Very different energy.
So choose based on workflow, not ego.
If you want an easy entry → choose easy entry.
If you want room to grow → choose room to grow.
If you like a specific style of mixing → admit that early.
Because the worst beginner setup is not the cheapest one.
It is the one that makes learning feel harder than it needs to be.
And honestly? That is how people end up with expensive gear and no progress.
